The Wye Community Farm sheep are now hard at work nibbling offthe regrowth on cleared scrub, to ensure that grassland has a chance toregenerate.

Our next charcoal making training day will be held on Sunday 17July. The event will be led by Alan Sage, local woodcraft expert.

Horse-drawn timber extraction from the site has now beencompleted. With all of the required capital work on the site now carried out,it will be the job of the Wye Community Farm herd of British White cattle toensure that scrub regrowth is prevented so allowing grassland to regenerate.

Our four legged friends at Sylvan Environmental came and did another three days timber extraction last week. Yser and Jeton are Ardennes horses, a breed ideally suited to the skilful and physically demanding task of pulling Ash trees up the steep slopes of the Wye Nature Reserve.

23/11/2009 18:57: Ash Felling

Some fine autumn weather has allowed a good start tobe made to the Ash felling to be carried out through this project. Clearing the Ash, and introducing grazing by Wye Community Farm cattle, will allow grassland to regenerate and so improve biodiversity on the Wye NNR.

The funding allocated to Wye Community Farm will enable measures to be implemented to improve and maintain the chalk grassland for which the Wye NNR is nationally recognised. Ash woodland will be cleared, using heavy horses, to allow grassland to regenerate. Infrastructure improvements such as cattle handling facilities and fencing will allow greater flexibility in managing grazing levels to prevent scrub encroachment and maintain a diverse sward.

Much of the work on this project will be carried out by the Wye Community Farm’s volunteer work parties, which meet every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Tamara Furey, Chair of Wye Community Farm
“We are delighted to receive this funding boost from the SITA Trust, which will allow us to carry out important work to ensure the Wye National Nature Reserve remains a home for rare and endangered species such as man orchid and adonis blue butterfly which can be enjoyed by future generations”.
