Souter was the first ever purpose built electric lighthouse making it a very important local and regional landmark. The area can be accessed from the two and a half miles of coast line which runs alongside it.
Within the lighthouse's grounds are picnic tables, a cafe and shop all of which are free to enter, the only cost is to enter the lighthouse itself. The National Trust wished to create more publicly accessible facilities and proposed to install two large pieces of children’s play equipment; within the free area of the site, this will currently only include two pieces of equipment; a pirate ship and a train, reflecting the heritage of the site.
With £10,000 from SITA Trust these facilities were created and are proving to be a very welcome addition.
