Jenny Twadell, BTCV Hollybush Conservation Centre
What is your role at BTCV?
Placement Co-ordinator / Administrator.
What kind of things might you do on a typical day at work?
I do (or delegate) all the office admin for all the projects at Hollybush. I organise
publicity and volunteer recruitment. I am in charge of volunteer support
needs and our work with young people on the every day tasks. I am staff
contact for our "Friends of" group that run events, tasks and socials at
Hollybush. The kind of things I might do would be: meet and greet new
volunteers, help with getting the group off on task. One or two meetings
with potential volunteers, updating the website and MIS systems. Meeting
with referral agencies or our "Friends of" group to discuss potential
projects. Finance for all the practical teams.
What do you like most about your job?
Working with the volunteer group, we work with such a diverse group of people that every day is different. We have plenty of characters at Hollybush and there is always something to smile about!
How did you end up working for BTCV?
I was a VO for 6 months before getting the part time admin job.
Did you study a relevant subject?
Environmental Studies degree.
Did you have any experience that helped you get the job?
Previous experience working in an office and supporting volunteers.
Are you (or have you been) involved in volunteering outside of work?
As a VO in 2003 and in a previous job in London working for a refugee charity, both roles involved intense hand on leadership and support of volunteers. I learnt you get out what you put in.
If you could create a GreenPrints Flagship project
which green space would you choose to improve and why?
An area that is underused by the local urban community and transform it into something
that all could enjoy and would have some benefit to wildlife.
If there was one celebrity who could be the face of volunteering for young
people aged 16-25, who would it be?
I don't know - really tough question! I think i'm too old to know that!
