Garden of Easton
Easton community centre offers support, education and volunteering opportunities to members of the Easton community. On the 8th December 2007 a group of 16 year olds conducted a survey asking 83 people from Easton about the surrounding grounds of the centre, specifically the garden. 100% of people stated that they would like to see the space cleaned up and the garden replanted by a local group of young people.
Twelve gardening development projects will be programmed from April 2008 to March 2009 and widely advertised in the surrounding area. A major aim of the 12 events will be to furnish the young people with accredited ecological related qualifications ie. NVQ, NCFE and ASDAN.
The events will be led by a core group of young people. Existing compost bins will be repaired, raised flower and herb beds planted and a community space encompassing a band stand and seating area will be regenerated. Amongst other tasks, encroaching scrub will be cleared and the resulting risings used to create wildlife friendly dead hedging, which will also serve as safe boundaries for the service users. This space will also provide a focus for the recruitment of young people/volunteers from the area to enable them to learn and take ownership of their environment.
