Cornish youth centre goes wild about conservation
In September 2007 the volunteers planted a heather garden and herb garden, installed a seating area using benches that they had built themselves and constructed habitat boxes under the guidance of BTCV leaders.
Many of the young volunteers who attended the two days of practical conservation activities are working towards their Cornwall Award or Youth Achievement Award.
The youth centre is a multi-use facility that is used by a number of groups including Cornwall youth services, a church youth group and a special needs group. The youth centre is also close to Helston Community College and is regularly used by the students.
the result
25 Cornish volunteers received £950 from GreenPrints to regenerate a youth centre in their town. Over two days the volunteers from Helston’s Youth Centre, 20 of which were between the ages of 16 and 25, regenerated an outdoor space for themselves and other youth centre users.
By improving the outside space the group have created better access and an opportunity for local young people to see native wildlife throughout the year. The wildlife area will provide a haven for birds, butterflies and other insects.
